The 33-year-old baseball star spent two hours Sunday teaching kids to bat at a new sports center built on a landfill in the poor suburb of Nezahualcoyotl. Pop star Madonna meanwhile prepared to perform for a sold-out second night in the capital as part of her 'Sticky & Sweet' tour. When asked what he thought about being in the sprawling capital at the same time as Madonna, Rodriguez said it was 'very good,' without elaborating. |

| 9 headless bodies found in Mexican border city |
| [Mon, 01 Dec 2008 03:38:37 GMT] The bodies of nine decapitated men have been found in a vacant empty lot in Tijuana, part of a wave of violence that has claimed at least 23 lives in less than 24 hours in this border city. A Baja California state police statement says the bodies were found Sunday in a poor Tijuana neighborhood, across from San Diego. The heads were discovered in plastic bags near the bodies. Three police identification cards were also found in the bags. Another five people were shot to death in four attacks throughout Tijuana on Sunday. |

| Mexican president vows to clean up corruption |
| [Sun, 30 Nov 2008 23:17:42 GMT] President Felipe Calderon pledged Sunday to clean up corruption within his administration and vowed his government would never negotiate with drug lords. Promising to continue the battle against organized crime, no matter how violent it gets, Calderon said he would push President-elect Barack Obama to do his part north of the U.S.-Mexican border. Calderon has long said the U.S. must do more to fight drug use and stop the illegal flow of weapons south from the U.S. Obama has said he will do both. |

Even lifelong residents of the U.S. side of the border are refusing to cross the line to see relatives or friends. Others are going less frequently or restricting themselves to daytime visits. Shopkeeper Ernesto Chavez said his wife no longer goes bowling or has lunch on Tuesdays with her sisters on the other side, a 40-year tradition. |

Chihuahua state prosecutor's office spokesman Alejandro Pariente says the gunmen arrived at the seafood restaurant Friday evening in three cars, approached a group of people and opened fire. Pariente says no arrests have been made. The attack comes days after police found the bodies of seven men who were killed in a school soccer field in an upscale neighborhood of Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas. |
